From 1975 until 1979 in the wake of the American withdrawal from Indochina, the notorious Khmer Rouge terrorised the Cambidian state. Inhabitants of Phnom Penh ere sent to the countryside leaving the city deserted, but for a few cadres and their victims. Visit the Tuol Sleng Museum of Genocide, a former school that become the dreaded S22 detention centre. This is followed by a journey out of the city centre to the errily peaceful and bucolic Choeung Ek, the site of a "Killing Fiend" where internees of S22 were murdered and buried in mass graves. more info
