Australia’s northern-most capital city, Darwin is a cultural melting pot, due largely to its proximity to the Asian continent. It is where one of the two official fireworks displays at Mindil Beach actually celebrates Chinese New Year. The other is held on 1 July, Territory Day. No surprise, since the Mindil Beach Sunset Market, with its many ethnic foodstalls, is a recognised icon of multiculturalism. Indeed, sampling Asian food is as much a sport in Darwin as barramundi fishing.
Yet Darwin is also the gateway to the rest of the Northern Territory, where the stuff of indigenous Australian history is made. Less than two hours’ drive away is Litchfield National Park, home of the Wagait Aboriginal people. Take a bush walk to explore the Australian outback or an invigorating dip in the Wangi Falls. Book your hotel in Darwin and be at the conflux where East meets West Down Under.
